Some Students Will be Able to Extend their OPT for 17 Months

USCIS has announced new regulations that will permit some students who graduated with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math to extend their Optional Practical Training by 17 months, or if they are not yet in Optional Practical Training, to receive 29 months of Optional Practical Training, when they apply.

In order to qualify for 29 months of Optional Practical Training, the following requirements must all be met:

  • The student must have successfully completed a degree in science, engineering, technology, or mathematics included in the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List from a college or university certified by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS);
  • The student must work in a job directly related to the student’s major area of study;
  • The employer must be enrolled in the US Citizenship and Immigration Services’ E–Verify program.

Students who cannot meet all of these requirements are currently not eligible for more than 12 months of Optional Practical Training.
